Doreen Wonda Johnson

New Mexico House of Representatives District 5

As the state representative for House District 5 in McKinley and San Juan Counties, Representative Doreen (Wonda) Johnson is currently in her sixth term. She chairs both the Indian Affairs Interim Committee and the House State Government, Elections, and Indian Affairs Committee. She is also a member of the House Labor, Veterans’ and Military Affairs Committee, the House Rules and Order of Business Committee.

Originally from Crownpoint, New Mexico, Wonda is a descendent of Jesus Arviso, the language interpreter for the Navajo Nation during the negotiation of the Treaty of 1868. Her maternal family extends from Springstead, NM as well as her paternal family from Standing Rock, NM. She received her BA in business from Marymount University in Falls Church, Virginia.

In 1989, Wonda was crowned Miss Indian America XXXVI. Wonda was able to compete in the first and oldest national scholarship pageant for Native American Indian women as a young woman because to her pageant title as Miss Indian Phoenix. In addition to helping her community as a citizen legislator, Wonda likes to travel the world, particularly South America, and spend her free time exploring museums, theater, hiking, and quilting.
